Introduction
LEGO Super Mario is one of LEGO’s strongest examples of digital adaptation without surrendering the core logic of the brick. Instead of turning Mario into a video game that happens to include LEGO branding, the system reverses the direction of adaptation. The concept emerged from a long collaboration between Nintendo and LEGO. Designers repeatedly described the challenge as creating something that neither company could make alone. Rather than reproducing a Mario video game, they borrowed ideas from level design, especially the creativity associated with games such as Super Mario Maker, and converted them into a building activity. This design choice solves a difficult problem. Traditional video games automatically track rules, points and progress. Physical toys do not. By placing sensors inside the character, LEGO effectively embeds part of the game system inside the toy itself rather than inside a separate screen.
