Did Hidden Side keep the brick first?

Introduction

LEGO Hidden Side was one of the company’s clearest tests of whether digital technology could strengthen brick play without replacing it. Launched in 2019, the theme combined haunted schools, buses, graveyards and houses with an augmented reality app that revealed ghosts, puzzles and hidden stories through a phone or tablet camera. LEGO’s challenge was not simply technical. It had to answer a strategic question: could screen-based play make physical LEGO models more interesting, or would the models become accessories for an app? What the physical haunted sets could do alone

This was important because Hidden Side was not sold as a phone game with a plastic accessory attached. The haunted school, shrimp boat, graveyard and train sets all contained transformations, trap-like mechanisms and story prompts embedded directly into the build. The theme’s fiction also supported this approach. Instead of requiring a rigid storyline delivered through software, the physical sets established a setting called Newbury, a town filled with supernatural activity. The characters, locations and visual design gave children enough material to invent stories on their own. This reflected a longstanding LEGO principle: the set should still be a toy when batteries are dead, servers disappear or children choose not to use the digital feature. Hidden Side attempted to preserve that principle even while experimenting with augmented reality.

The digital layer worked by scanning the completed model through a mobile device.
