A broad product portfolio helps LEGO absorb market shocks because weakness in one theme, age group or customer segment can be offset by strength elsewhere. Each new set creates several operational questions:
- How much demand should be forecast?
- Which factory should produce it?
- How many components are required?
- How long should it remain in the catalogue?
- How much inventory should be held in different regions?

A broad catalogue affects operations in several ways:
